FAQs – Professional and Workforce Development Certificate Programs

What professional development and certificate programs does IXL offer?

IXL offers a wide range of professional development and certificate programs across several fields, including:

  • Health & Medical — Biotechnology, Certified Clinical Medical Assistant (CCMA), Certified Phlebotomy Technician, Medical Administrative Assistant, Medical Billing & Coding, Pharmacy Technician, Emergency & Disaster Health Systems, and Medical Cannabis Studies.
  • Technology — Cybersecurity, Biotechnology, and Cannabis Studies.
  • Leadership & Management — Community Leadership, Project Management, and Management courses.

Most of these programs are offered online and do not require a prior application. Visit the Health & Medical, Technology, and Leadership & Management sections of the IXL website for full details and registration links.

Are these programs online or in person?

Most professional development and certificate programs are fully online. Some are instructor-led with live sessions at set times; others are self-paced so you can work on your own schedule. A few programs, like Community Leadership, have in-person or hybrid components. Each program page notes the format clearly. Learn more about types of courses.

How long do professional development programs take to complete?

Program length varies widely depending on the subject and depth. Some certificate programs can be completed in a few weeks; others take several months. Check the individual program page for schedule and time commitment details.

Do I receive a credential when I complete a program?

Yes. Depending on the program, you may receive a certificate of completion, an industry-recognized credential, or preparation for a nationally recognized exam. For example, programs like the CCMA and Medical Billing & Coding include vouchers for certification exams. Check your specific program page to understand what you’ll earn upon completion.

Can these programs help me prepare for a UMBC degree program?

Some can. Programs in Biotechnology and Community Leadership have articulation agreements with UMBC degree programs, meaning the work you do in IXL can count toward a degree if you’re later admitted. Not all programs have this option. Contact us to ask about your specific area of interest.
