About IXL

What is UMBC’s Institute of Extended Learning (IXL)?

UMBC’s Institute of Extended Learning (IXL) provides non-credit and professional education programs that connect the UMBC campus to the broader community. IXL serves learners of all ages and backgrounds, from middle schoolers in summer enrichment programs to working adults seeking professional credentials to individuals training for a new career.

IXL programs are developed in partnership with UMBC faculty, industry experts, and workforce partners to ensure they reflect current employer needs and real-world skill requirements.

Do I need to be a current UMBC student to take an IXL program?

No. Most IXL programs are open to the public and do not require an application or prior enrollment at UMBC. Anyone who meets a program’s requirements is welcome to register. Some programs — like the Diagnostic Medical Sonography program — do have a formal admissions process, but these are the exception, not the rule.

Where are IXL programs offered?

It depends on the program. Many professional development and certificate programs are fully online and either instructor-led (live sessions at a set time) or self-paced (work on your own schedule with deadlines). Some programs, such as Community Leadership, are offered mostly in-person at UMBC’s campus. The Diagnostic Medical Sonography program is 100% in-person. Check the individual program page for format details.

Can IXL courses count toward a UMBC degree?

Most IXL programs are non-credit and are not automatically applied toward a degree. However, some programs — including Biotechnology and Community Leadership — have articulation agreements that allow completed coursework to count toward a UMBC degree if you’re later admitted to a degree program. Ask us about articulation options if you’re interested in eventually pursuing a degree at UMBC.
