Maryland Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act (WIOA)

What Is WIOA?

The Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act (WIOA) provides funding for unemployed or underemployed Marylanders to gain valuable skills and certifications for a new career. Many of our programs are approved by the Maryland Higher Education Commission (MHEC) for WIOA eligibility. The program is administered through One Stop Centers located throughout the state.

If you meet certain criteria, you may qualify for WIOA funding! Look for the MD Job Center in your area to get started. Once approved for WIOA funding, students can begin training right away and take the next step toward a rewarding new career.

FAQs for WIOA Students

How do I get the books for my course?

Depending on your course, your materials will be provided in one of two ways: either shipped directly to your mailing address or provided digitally for download or online access. No matter the format, we’ll ensure you receive all the resources you need to succeed in your course.

I’ve never taken an online course—what do I need to get started?

If this is your first online class, don’t worry—it’s simple to get set up! All you need is a computer with reliable internet access and working speakers. While a microphone and webcam are recommended for participating in discussions or asking questions, they’re not required to complete the course.

Do I need to be a UMBC student to register for a course?

These UMBC IXL courses are open to the public, and anyone is welcome to enroll. You do not need to be a current UMBC student to register.

Can I register a group of students for a program?

Absolutely! We make it easy to register students in whatever way works best for you. Whether you’d like to enroll a private cohort for a specific program or register students individually, our IXL manager will assist with the details to ensure a smooth and seamless process from start to finish.
